Quick Southern-Style Green Beans

Quick Southern-Style Green Beans

These yummy Quick Southern-Style Green Beans taste like they have been cooking for hours. When, in reality, start to finish they are done in about 30 minutes. One of my tricks in achieving that “cooked all day” taste – in a variety of recipes, is chicken base. Adding just a bit of it to some chicken broth when cooking these beans brings out such depth of flavor. Oh, and let’s not forget that some smoky bacon is always welcome! Next level deliciousness!

I love using the canned flat cut Italian green beans. To me they taste most like homemade. Very flavorful. And also they do not have a bunch of strings in them like other canned or frozen beans sometimes have.

Serve up these Quick Southern-Style Green Beans alongside any grilled meat and some mac n cheese. Or next to some bacon cheeseburger meatloaf and mashed potatoes. So good!

Ingredients

  • 1 XL can (or 2 38 ounce cans) Italian Green Beans I use Allen's brand
  • cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon chicken base
  • 1 shallot chopped very fine
  • 4 slices bacon
  • salt, pepper, garlic powder to taste

Instructions

  • Drain and rinse the Italian green beans.
  • Fry bacon in the bottom of a medium saucepan. Remove when brown and crispy and set aside.
Turn the heat off. Now add in shallot and a bunch of freshly ground black pepper to the bacon grease in the pan. The residual heat will slowly cook the shallots. Stir to distribute heat throughout and scrape up any bacon bits from the bottom of the pan.
  • When shallots are softened, add in the chicken base. Stir well until the chicken base is incorporated. Now add in the green beans as well as the chicken broth and a sprinkle of garlic powder. Add a bit more black pepper if desired. Stir.
  • Now turn the heat back on to medium heat. Cook uncovered for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until a good bit of the liquid has evaporated.
At this point taste for salt and pepper and add as needed.
  • To serve, stir in or sprinkle the reserved bacon bits over the top of the beans and load your plate up! Enjoy!
