Waffle Board
Waffle Board for the win! Such a beautiful and easy way to entertain a crowd during the holidays or at any gathering of friends and family. I recently prepared this for a small group this weekend while my husband put together his homemade Italian sausage. We usually invite friends and family over while he makes 40-50 pounds. Such a fun time! I like to have a charcuterie board out and have mimosas ready. This year we started pretty early and I decided to go with more of a breakfast theme for my board. It was a hit! And we literally ate from it for a few hours.
This Waffle Board will now probably be my go-to board for our sausage party. It would also be perfect for a morning tailgate, breakfast for a crowd at the beach or lake, Christmas morning, New Year’s Day morning or really any type of brunch event. No fancy ingredients here, which is such a plus! Get yourself a large board and your shopping list is below. Follow the picture as a guide for how to arrange everything. Enjoy!
Waffle Board ingredients:
- Belgian waffles – I use Costco’s individually wrapped belgian waffles, cut in half.
- Bacon – I use Boar’s Head pre cooked bacon that I quickly crisp up in a skillet, drain on paper towels and cool before putting on board.
- Chicken nuggets – I get Publix nuggets the day before; I spread them out on a rack to completely cool and then refrigerate overnight in a ziploc bag. Place cold nuggets on the board in a decorative bowl. You could also use sausage balls.
- Sharp cheddar or Colby Jack cheese, cubed
- Butter Waffle cookies – I use a Belgian waffle shaped butter cookie found at Sprouts Market.
- Cheese Straws – My favorite is Mook Mills.
- Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Cranberry crisps – You could substitute fig and olive or any other fruit crisp cracker.
- Fruit – Strawberries, blueberries, grapes
- Pistachios
Arranging the Board:
For any board, start with the larger ingredients and then fill in with everything else, paying attention to color, texture, and shape so that there is a variety across the board. For this board, I started by putting the chicken nuggets in an acrylic bowl and placed the bowl on the top right corner of the board. Then, the cheese cubes on the bottom left corner. The waffles I cut in half and arranged in a diagonal across the center of the board. I then tucked the bacon next to the cheese and the cheese straws next to the bowl of nuggets. The Butter Waffle cookies and the Pumpkin Cranberry crisps came next, huddled close to the Belgian waffles.
At this point, the major items are on the board. Now look at where there needs to be a bit of color added. Fruit, nuts and herbs are always the finishing touches that pull it all together. I always put colorful berries on the edges of a board and anywhere that needs a pop of color. Then take nuts, in this case roasted, shelled, salted pistachios, and fill in any gaps. And it’s done! A beautiful and delicious Waffle Board ready for your family and friends to start munching on! Don’t forget the mimosas!
